I'm interested to know how this works visually. If you look at sites adding 'social tags and windows' they are all looking a bit messy. What is the path for the design of future websites? Maybe it will be all about mobile apps? by lesanto

I guess we could look backwards to see how things have changed and use that to predict going forwards? Websites have become more interactive, more social (audience participation makes things juicy) with a fledgling app market (on many platforms). Obviously this will continue to develop. I think the iphone/pad/droid is a hint of things to come. My hunch is that the PC won't be the primary point of contact with the internet; and services will be consumed on phone/pad/car and tv. Technology wise; I don't think short term html5 will give us much more functionality over scripts and flash but it should help advance the baseline. As for social tags - TBL's semantic web is still a long way off - I wonder if it's still relevant; my hunch says it still is. by darren

From what I have seen so far, the social integration into websites to create 'socially active' sites is still at a very infant stage. Basic Twitter and Facebook share widgets and feed plug ins is about as far as we've got. It all looks a bit tacked on, messy and done because "a social media expert told us to put that there". We have a long way to go. This site, Cofacio, is the possibly one of the best implementations of the socially active web I've seen! It is social, it's multichannel and backchannel - not just a catalogue or broadcast - it relies completely on its users and it actually DOES something practical. It has social integration, with Facebook and Twitter, but doesn't just plonk a window with an open social feed or stream on a page. The integration is real, it's part of the way the site works. by lesanto

It's the day-after-tomorrow website that's hard to imagine, I think. I never thought the traditional website would become so useless so quickly. Also I suspect it won't be what it looks like that matters so much - maybe it's sure to be multiple- sensory? More and more savvy people, with less & less inclination to lurk, huge increase in participation. I certainly agree with you that we have begun scratching the surface with add on features. Faceboard has impressed me - made me feel like a magazine creator. Maybe the torchlight lies in the notion that we are all creators. The website will become fit for the purpose of permitting creative engagement. As a writer, I suspect my writing skills will become less dominant - with audio, video and holograms racing forward. The reassuring thing is that none of us has any chance of being right about the shape of this future website - I think. Great to see you in all your finery on iPad. by Omaniblog

One of the most interesting things happening on the web at the moment is the move from individual web use to social web use. We've always chatted to other people on the internet on social networks and chat rooms but now this social behaviour is moving firmly into other areas such as content consumption (news and video sites), shopping and even search, as far as I can see this trend is set to continue. What's not so clear is where all this 'social activity' will happen. Will a few sites such as Facebook continue to dominate or will we see greater diversification? by sim
