My brother makes the best gravy ever, his secret ingredient is port. It really is delicious added to lots of oxo cubes, some cornflour and the juices from the roast. Horror stories: do not drink too much on christmas eve when your brother adds port to the gravy on christmas day. by soosy

But seriously. Have you made your sloe gin yet - should be brewing.... And your mincemeat. As for the actual day itself, make it the JOB of the OH in the house! :-) (And always get frozen yorkshires) by bad_housewife

Tell me more about the sloe gin. How, when, where, etc? I turned out to be a non drinker (Mum still thinks I was switched at birth) but could do with drinky twist for the blog please! by wannabe_goddess

My other Xmas tip is do what you want, not what tradition dictates. Be brave and cook what YOU want. One year we had a fondue instead of a traditional roast... last year we had a delicious potato bake (with cream and sundried tomatoes)instead of roast potatoes. by soosy

Pick sloes NOW! Or on day of first frost (so they burst - if impatient like me, pick and chuck in freezer to make them burst!). Chuck sloes in old gin bottle - half fill. Top all the way up with gin. Leave in cool dark place for as long as possible. Drink! :-) But drink sensibly!! :-) by bad_housewife

Buy frozen pastry for mince pies, but make your own mincemeat. It's a doddle and sooo much nicer than shop bought. by Tiggertoo

Definately MYO mincemeat - so easy and vastly better than bought. Had a fab recipe from bbcgoodfood last year. Mince pies have never tasted so good. And make the cake in October so you can feeeed it lots. by cakeshaped

I use my grandmother's recipe for mincemeat. With one or two tweaks. by Tiggertoo
